ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -
Angelina County authorities have captured the man believed to have stabbed his girlfriend and her brother to death on John Kolb Road early Thursday.
31-year-old Terrance Demound Barnes was found sometime after 10 p.m. Thursday, hiding under a log on Deer Creek Road, off of FM 1669.
Sheriff's Office Captain Allen Hill says authorities found tracks and brought dogs in to sniff out the scent. A helicopter was positioned over the area, where Barnes was located a short time later. Hill confirmed Barnes is in the custody will be booked into the Angelina County Jail.
"It's a group effort. Thank every agency, every citizen. It's been a community effort. And, it's over," Hill said.
Authorities spent about 11 hours searching for Barnes in a wooded area off State Highway 103 East, forming a perimeter just outside the Lufkin city Limits. Police reportedly spotted him in that area around noon.
"Heat has dampered us a whole lot, with the dogs enduring and not having to run that far or stay going that long. When one set of dogs would go down, we'd have to get another set," said Angelina County Sheriff Kent Henson.
According to Lt. Jimmy York, two teams with six to eight dogs each, had spent the day in the woods. Around 8:30 p.m. another team of "fresh" dogs were brought to the scene to relieve the others.
"Well, anytime you go into anything like this, I mean it's to be, subject to be, treated as armed and dangerous. I mean, with the magnitude of the crime he has committed," said Henson.
Barnes, who is from Center, was living with his girlfriend Rosa Pina at a home on the 500 block of John Kolb Road.
Hill said Barnes stabbed Rosa during a disturbance around 1:30 a.m. The Pina's sister ran into the room and tried to pull Barnes off of the girlfriend, who was holding an infant, Hill said. Pina's brother, Pepe Pina, then came into the room and got in a fight with Barnes and was stabbed, according to Hill.
Rosa, who was already seriously injured, ran out of the house and Barnes caught up to her in the driveway and cut her throat, Hill said. It's believed she suffered eight to 10 stab wounds.
Hill said both victims were dead at the scene.
"We had a deputy at another call just two blocks away," Hill said. "And he got there really quick but it was too late."
A neighbor said he heard a commotion at their home on John Kolb Road, but thought nothing of it. He says the couple frequently got into loud disputes.
"I thought it was normal, another argument," said W.D. Foreman, who lives across the street.
As of midnight Friday, Hill said deputies had not recovered the knife believed to have been used in the slayings.
Five children were in the house at the time, some of whom are believed to have witnessed the attack. Investigators said counseling will be offered to the children. Child Protective Services has released them into the custody of other family members.
"That's something that a kid shouldn't see. Nobody should see it, especially a kid," said Hill.
Barnes has previous convictions for assault and drug charges. Information on possible charges for Thursday's deadly stabbing are not expected to be available until Friday morning.
Hudson Police, San Augustine Sheriff's Office, Angelina County Constables, DPS, Nacogdoches County Constable Jason Bridges and a deputy and Lufkin Police aided in the search.
This is apparently not the first tragedy for the Pina family. Rosa and Pepe's brother Derrick Pina was killed in May 2010 after a hit and run along Highway 7 in Nacogdoches County, according to relatives. In January 2010, two other brothers were murdered execution-style near the town of Reklaw in Rusk County. The bodies of Rigoberto Tovar Pina and Steve Abran Parra were found along Rusk County Road 4248.
