Babysitter Charged In Death Of Baby

Babysitter charged in death of baby

A woman has pleaded innocent to murder in the death of a five-month-old boy she was baby-sitting. Thirty-two-year-old Melissa Dovala of Amherst is charged in the death of Riley Smath of Lorain. Lorain County Coroner Paul Matus says the baby died February sixth as a result of head injuries. Dovala pleaded innocent yesterday to charges including murder, felonious assault and child endangering. Matus ruled Smath's death a homicide in March. Dovala was baby-sitting Smath on the day he died. The boy's mother, Eileen Callahan-Smath, of Lorain, took him from Dovala's home to Amherst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A pretrial hearing has been set for June 14th in Lorain County Common Pleas Court.
