Former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora is "in transit" from Youngstown to the North Carolina federal prison where he'll serve his prison term.
Dimora was transported Thursday afternoon. On July 31, Dimora was ordered to serve 28 years behind bars. He was also ordered to pay $98,000 in restitution.
The defense requested Dimora serve his time at FCC Butner in North Carolina for their medical facilities. The defense also requested federal public defenders take over for the appeal.
Dimora was found guilty on dozens of charges in a bribes for contracts scheme that went on for years.
Dimora did tearfully address the court while seated, and said he had nothing to do with any type of criminal activity with regards to Cuyahoga County. He said he "had no idea any of that was going on. Had I known that, I would have made the necessary reporting as to that kind of activity. I was not a part of ripping off the taxpayers of Cuyahoga County with that type of activity."
Dimora also became emotional during the final phase of his sentencing. Dimora started to cry and wiped away tears as his attorney read parts of letters his friends and family wrote.
Dimora has not adjusted well in prison, according to 19 Action News sources. He also had a fall in prison and was hospitalized for a head injury for several days.
