BGSU to demolish popular culture center

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) – It may be too late to save an iconic building on the Bowling Green State University campus. The university is moving ahead with demolition of the popular culture center.

Workers were already preparing for demolition to the building on East Wooster Street Monday. These workers are from an environmental cleanup company from Toledo sent to do the abatement of the building, taking out asbestos and even removing some of the windows. This work paves the way for demolition, which a university spokesman said will happen some time next week.

The university is taking down the historic building because they say it's in poor condition and they want to make room for a new student health center.

Despite recent protests by faculty, the building is coming down.

"We are very sad. A lot of people were openly weeping in the meetings we've had with the president, with the provost, with the dean," said pop culture professor Jeremy Wallach.

The professors said they will now focus on moving on and moving into their new building in the center of campus, Shatzel Hall. Still, they were unhappy about not being given enough notice about the demolition of their building.
