Fire ignites on construction site of Aiken High School

COLLEGE HILL (FOX19) -

Fire crews were called to a currently under construction, Aiken High School on Friday.

Dispatchers received a call that a fork lift was on fire on the site, just before 1 p.m.

Firefighters noticed a large column of black smoke while headed towards the scene.

Upon arrival, a large industrial fork lift, dozens of pallets of foam and wood roofing materials were all burning in an outside area.

Crews say they could not put out the fire at first because it wasn't located near any paved roadways or working hydrants. As a result, extra responders were called to assist and relay fire from Belmont Avenue to the back of the lot, some 2,000 feet away.

Damage is estimated at $100,000, with the cause of the fire still undetermined.

No one was injured, including the 37 firefighters needed to put out the blaze.
