Man executed for fatally stabbing jail guard with homemade knife
The state has executed a man convicted of using a makeshift knife to kill a jail guard about to search his cell for weapons in 1984. Forty-five-year-old William Zuern was pronounced dead at 10:04 a-m at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. His lawyer had decided not to ask the U-S Supreme Court to stop the execution after a federal appeals court refused to step in. She hasn't said why she she decided against a final appeal to the high court. Prison officials say Zuern had refused to speak to the staff this morning and had stuffed his ears with toilet paper so he couldn't hear them, either.
