Jimmy Dimora's new attorney filed an appeal by email Monday morning with the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The move was anticipated.
On July 31, Dimora was ordered to serve 28 years behind bars. He was also ordered to pay $98,000 in restitution.
Dimora was found guilty on dozens of charges in a bribes for contracts scheme that went on for years.
Dimora did tearfully address the court the day he was sentenced to prison, and said he had nothing to do with any type of criminal activity with regards to Cuyahoga County. He said he "had no idea any of that was going on. Had I known that, I would have made the necessary reporting as to that kind of activity. I was not a part of ripping off the taxpayers of Cuyahoga County with that type of activity."
Dimora has not adjusted well in prison, according to 19 Action News sources. He also had a fall in prison and was hospitalized for a head injury for several days.
He will serve his prison sentence at FCC Butner in North Carolina for their medical facilities.

19 Action News is investigating the whereabouts of convicted former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora.
Dimora is supposed to serve his sentence on federal bribery charges at a federal prison in North Carolina, but more than four months after his sentencing, he's still not there.
