Former Western and Southern Open champion Jelena Jankovic lost her opening match Monday night on Center Court.
Jankovic, who won win 2009 and advanced to the finals in 2011, was beaten in a third-set tiebreak by Peng Shuai in a match that nearly took three hours to complete.
In the men's draw, 16 seed Phillip Kohlschreiber was beaten by American Brian Baker. Baker missed 6-years of professional tennis because of various injuries, but made a startling comeback at Wimbledon and has advanced in Mason as a wild card.
Play continues Tuesday with Serena and Venus Williams both playing on Center Court as well as Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish.
