Four teens charged after starting fire in a Reading park

READING, OH (FOX19) -

Reading police have charged four Lockland teens each with one count of arson and two counts of vandalism for setting a garbage can on fire at Voorhees Park in Reading.

The teens admitted to setting the garbage can fire, Aug. 15. The fire rapidly spread to the park's picnic shelter and was a total loss.

"They did admit to the act, they confessed, I understand from the investigator that there's a lot of remorse," said Reading Fire Chief Kevin Kaiser. "When you start getting to this age and you're playing with fire, it's vandalism, it's not a behavior of curiosity at this age."

People living near the park like Donna Bond are disappointed the popular spot is no longer available.

"We come to the park often, at least once a week and we just love it here," said Bond.

"I was just devastated when I walked up and saw it was closed with police taping it off."

The City of Reading is insured for the cost of damages which have not been totaled at this time.

The four teens names will be not released by police because they are juveniles.
