CLARKSDALE, MS -

(WMC-TV) – An elderly woman was beaten with a brick outside of her home. Now, a teenager is accused of the brutal crime.

77-year-old Shirley Gordon is feeling much better this week now that her bruises and gashes are beginning to heal.

Police say a 14-year-old boy savagely beat Gordon with a brick in order to get his hands on her debit card.

"If mommas don't teach them when they're coming up, that's what happens," said Gordon. "He needs to be put in prison."

The teenager faces grand larceny and assault charges, but it is up to the courts to decide whether to try him as an adult.

Tuesday, he remained in custody, along with several others authorities say are responsible for some of the recent violence in Clarksdale.

"We've arrested three and charged three with shooting into an occupied dwelling, we've charged another person with an aggravated assault, we also had a homicide over the weekend, we were able to take that guy into custody and have that guy into custody as well," said Captain Robbie Linley, Clarksdale Police Department.

Police are working to pull gangsters off the street, but Alexis Moore says there are plenty more out there.

"I do not feel safe when the sun goes down, I be trying to go in the house, because you never know what might happen," said Alexis Moore, who lives in Clarksdale.

Shirley Gordon will keep her box cutter close as she waits for her newly-ordered pistol. She is spending a lot of time outside because she refuses be a prisoner in her own home.

"I'm going to keep going just like I did that night," she said.

The 14-year-old suspect will go before a judge this week.
