Man convicted of killing couple for 20 dollars:
A jury took only four hours yesterday to convict a man of murdering a Hamilton couple as they slept to steal 20 dollars from them. The jury will return on Monday to decide whether to recommend the death penalty or life in prison for 22-year-old Jason Campbell. Campbell's defense team didn't contest the charges. They said Campbell had wanted to plead guilty but agreed to a trial solely because he wanted a jury, rather than a panel of judges to decide his sentence. They're hoping the jury will take into consideration Campbell's physically and sexually abusive childhood, much of which was spent bouncing between as many as 27 different foster homes.
Campbell was convicted of the February 2003 slayings of 44-year-old Donald Riley and his 55-year-old wife, Helen. Campbell said he used the 20 dollars he stole to get drunk at a bar and then returned to the Rileys' home, where he spent the night in a spare bedroom.
