UNION CITY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A co-manager at a Union City Kroger was arrested after allegedly shoving an elderly man who was on the store's property collecting food for a local church to donate to the needy.
The manager, Jack Hinesley, was arrested Wednesday and charged with simple battery and assault.
That charge could change to aggravated battery, according to a press conference that was held on Friday.
The man Union City Police said was assaulted is 73-year-old John Young.
A police report said surveillance video shows Young getting into his car to retrieve a piece of paper that shows he is affiliated with a local church responsible for giving out food to the needy. In that video, police said an officer saw Hinesley "forcefully push" Young.
Glynn Jenkins, a spokesman for Kroger, released a statement to CBS Atlanta on Friday.
"What happened to Mr. Young was a terrible thing. This never should have happened and we deeply regret that it did. After an internal investigation, we have decided to terminate Mr. Hinesley's employment with Kroger. We hope Mr. Young recovers quickly from the injuries he suffered."
