(RNN) – All nine people wounded during the shooting outside the Empire State Building were injured by police gunfire, according to the NYPD commissioner.
CNN reported Saturday the two officers who faced down alleged shooter Jeffrey Johnson fired a total of 16 rounds – one fired nine, the other seven. Neither officer received any wounds; Johnson died as a result of his injuries.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Three bystanders were hit by bullets, while six more got struck by fragments.
Six of the victims were released from the hospital. None of the injuries were considered serious.
On Friday, Commissioner Ray Kelly told CNN the officers' gunfire hit "flowerpots and other objects around," causing the injuries.
According to police officials, Johnson, 53, fatally shot a former coworker at close range around 9:03 a.m. ET Friday. Authorities identified the victim as 41-year-old Steven Ercolino, vice president of sales at Hazan Imports Corp.
Johnson reportedly used a .45-caliber handgun he carried in a black bag. Kelly said in a news conference a construction worker followed Johnson after the shooting and alerted two uniformed NYPD officers on Fifth Avenue.
The shooter pointed his gun at the officers outside the Empire State Building, who returned fire and killed him, Kelly said. Officials ruled out terrorism for the motive.
According to NBC News, this was not the first shooting at the Empire State Building. In 1997, Ali Abu Kamal, 69, opened fire on the observation deck of the building.
Kamal killed one and injured six before killing himself.
Since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, notable landmarks in New York City, like the Empire State Building, have increased security.
It is the second largest single-office complex in the country, with about 15,000 people working there. It opened May 1, 1931, and more than 10,000 people visit the building each day.
