Police in North Las Vegas are seeking a man and woman believed to have taken a donation box from a church.
According to North Las Vegas police, the theft was reported on June 24 at the St. John Neumann Church in the 2500 block of W. El Campo Grande near Ann Road.
Detectives said a man and woman were seen walking through the front door of the church about 4:10 p.m. that day. Church administrators told police that one of the two began tampering with a 3-foot tall donation box.
Police said, after several minutes, the pair was able to take the box with an unknown amount of cash in it.
NLVPD also posted surveillance video of the alleged incident. The video shows the man lift a statue from atop the box while the woman looks around. The man walks away with the box, the video shows.
In a statement, Father Jim Jankowski, Las Vegas Catholic Diocese administrator for the church, said members of the diocese were saddened by the theft.
"We appreciate the efforts and attention of law enforcement with regard to this matter and thank them for their diligence," Jankowski said. "While this was an unfortunate incident, we feel deeply that this is not a reflection of the greater Las Vegas and North Las Vegas community, and our experience has been one of compassion and generosity even during these tough economic times."
The church said added security measures are being planned to prevent further thefts.
Police said the male suspect was described as white, 25-35 years old with short brown hair and a medium build. The woman in the incident was described as 25-35 years old with long brown hair and a heavy build.
Police noted theft took place in between Sunday services that day.
People with information on the suspects are being urged to call NLV police at 702-633-9111 or Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
