Flag Day

Flag Day special to Ohio town dubbed 'Flag Village, USA'

It's Flag Day, as the nation pays tribute to "Old Glory." The idea of an annual day celebrating the flag is believed to have originated in 1885, when a Wisconsin school teacher arranged for students to observe June 14th as "Flag Birthday" -- the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes. Arlington, Ohio, will celebrate the day probably like no other. Mayor Karl Best says the town of 15-hundred a very patriotic place, resulting in its being called "Flag Village, USA."

There are flags flying on every light post running through the main drag. There's an active VFW chapter, and the population includes many military veterans. As for what other, less-patriotic towns and cities in America should do, Best says: "They need to get on board and back the country, thick or thin" -- and the flag is a symbol of that support.
