With the Greater Cincinnati 2012 Race for the Cure one month away, organizers say they made the right decision in adding a 10K race to the mix as 10K registration numbers have surged past their estimates.
"Looking at how Komen 10K races have fared in other cities, we expected that 10 percent of our participants would sign up for the 10K," said Amy Wagner, director of development of the Komen Greater Cincinnati Affiliate. "That estimate has been blown away – our current numbers show that roughly 20 percent of those participating in the race will run the 10K."
The 2012 Race for the Cure marks the first time in the affiliate's history that a 10K has been offered. The 10K race joins the existing 5K, 2K and Family Fun Run. With the 10K race at 6.2 miles, race organizers had hoped it would attract a new type of runner and organizers say it has done just that.
"We knew Cincinnati was a strong running community, and our 10K registration numbers thus far certainly support that," said Peggy Isenogle, executive director of the Komen Greater Cincinnati Affiliate. "We've been lucky to work with great organizations to help us plan and put together a top-notch 10K that the region's running community deserves."
Breast cancer survivors and competitive runners alike have registered for the 10K Race. Susan Hollon, 49 of Springboro, Ohio said she's looking forward to running the 10K Race alongside two of her daughters. Hollon, a former collegiate runner at Wichita State Kansas, was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40 and has been in recovery for the past nine years.
"I'm just so thrilled to be out here running," said Hollon. "Cincinnati really is a running community. I'm not surprised to hear numbers are up."
The 15th Annual Race for the Cure will take place Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012. To register for the 2012 Komen Greater Cincinnati Race for the Cure, visit www.komencincinnati.org.
