LEBANON, OH (FOX19) -
A farmer in Lebanon has created a corn maze honoring his favorite baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds.
There's a plenty to like up here at Irons' Fruit Farm, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh baked goods and animals for the kids, but Bill Irons says one of the biggest attractions is the corn maze.
"It's more of a family thing now that people want to bring their kids out, take the hay ride, have the whole farm experience," he said.
Beginning Sept. 1 the farm experience can include wandering through a 12-acre corn maze that Irons says he made on his riding mower equipped with a GPS.
"With GPS you're not watching where you're going, you're watching the computer and you're following it and it tells you stay on this line," said Irons.
Creating a corn maze is a daunting task for most people, but Irons has been doing this for years. He's even carved a corn maze honoring the Bengals and this year he was asked to do the Cincinnati Reds, which he says was a little nerve racking.
"I was so nervous about getting it done because, like I say it was important to me because the Reds called me and said will you do a maze so this was, even though I've been doing it for 13 years this was very important, very big too me," he said.
It took Irons about two weeks to cut the intricate pattern into the shoulder high corn, but he says it's a labor of love and a love of art.
"I didn't go to college. In high school art was my major, I mean I took every art class I could, love to paint all that. I jokingly call this my 12-acre canvas, to me I enjoy doing this," he said.
The fruit farm and the corn maze provide what Irons calls argi-tainment for the public and gives him a sense of pride.
"When you get done and you actually get the picture from the air and it turns and you get it the way you want it to look, it's just something special to me, I did this," he said.
Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and under.
$1 from each customer goes to support the Cincinnati Reds Foundation.
The maze opens Saturday Sept. 1 and will be open Saturdays and Sundays through October.
