Governor's Cup tailgating supports Boy Scouts

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Despite rain chances, hundreds of loyal fans arrived early to find a place to park and tailgate before the Governor's Cup Sunday.

They may not know it, but WAVE 3 discovered their ticket to park is a win whether their team won or lost.

The lots surrounding Papa John's Cardinal Stadium have become a destination for fans well before kickoff and the driving force behind Boy Scouts.

"This is our main fundraiser for the entire year," Kenny June said. June and other local troop leaders, parents and scouts volunteered to staff Churchill Downs lots. The track allows non-profit organizations to earn money by working three different gravel parking lots.

Parents said it was an enjoyable way to make money. "I enjoy the electricity in the air with all the fans," Janelle Price said. "It's a tremendous opportunity and it's a huge fundraiser for our pack."

Before they packed in the parking lot, Cards and Wildcats fans got an early start. "I've always tailgated. Been a thing I love to do for a long time now," James Durst said. "There's extreme fans on both sides, but I can get along with them."

"We make it a priority to make it to every UK game we can," Allen Maples said. "It's all about getting together with your friends. Rooting on your team and supporting your school with good team spirit and enjoying life."

It is a rivalry fueling a road trip to wherever the teams play.
