CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A man caught on camera by FOX19 remains unidentified after swimming in the Ohio River during the Cincinnati Bell WEBN Fireworks.
An investigation to find the illegal swimmer revealed one arrest at 7:40 Sunday night by Cincinnati Police.
45-year-old Danny Lind of Batavia was arrested before the fireworks started for jumping into the Ohio River. He was charged with disorderly conduct while intoxicated.
Calls to the Lind family were not returned.
The United States Coast Guard says the Ohio River is considered a public access route, however during Riverfest, that specific section is marked off as a safety zone and illegal to enter.
"There's always debris and everything coming into the river from off the bridges, so we always have to make sure through the Coast Guard that the river is clear so they can fire those fireworks off," said Capt. Gary Auffart with Newport Fire Department.
Auffart says emergency dispatchers get a few calls every month about people swimming in the river unaware of the danger involved.
"Even really good swimmers get in the river and they're taken down by the undercurrent," said Auffart. "Plus with debris and everything else that could strike you and you just don't realize it."
