CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Former XU basketball player Dez Wells will now play basketball at the University of Maryland.

Wells, who was expelled from Xavier last month, made the announcement Tuesday morning.

"The last couple of weeks have been the toughest time in my life for my family and I," Wells posted on his Lockerz page. "I've learned that it is a major responsibility that comes with being a student athlete at all times. I'm thankful that God has blessed me with a second opportunity to continue my education....after careful consideration with my family, I've decided to attend the University of Maryland."

Wells' expulsion was the result of a sexual assault accusation. The Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office presented the case to a grand jury and no charges were filed. However, Xavier upheld its decision of expulsion.

Several schools reportedly showed interest in Wells, including the University of Kentucky.

Wells started 32 games as a freshman in the 2011-12 season. He finished fourth on the team in scoring and third in rebounding.

Wells will likely not be eligible for the 2012-13 season.
