Patients Exposed to Viruses

Hospital says patients may have been exposed to viruses

A hospital in New York has told more than 170 patients they may have been exposed to H-I-V or hepatitis because of equipment that wasn't cleaned properly.  A spokesman for North Shore University Hospital says doctors believe the risk of transmission was "minuscule."  He says the hospital took a precautionary measure by sending letters to the patients.

The hospital says 86 of the 177 people who were notified have already been tested, and none has tested positive for either virus.  The hospital says it doesn't have records that equipment used to check digestive systems was properly disinfected for procedures done between late April and early May.
