Shopping Mall Plot

Authorities seek third suspect in alleged shopping mall plot

Federal authorities in Columbus say they're seeking a third person in the alleged plot to blow up a shopping mall.  Thirty-two-year-old Nuradin Abdi is charged with providing support to al-Qaida and document fraud.  Admitted al-Qaida operative Iyman Faris also has been implicated in the plan. Faris is serving a 20-year federal sentence after he pleaded guilty to scouting U-S targets for al-Qaida.

U-S Attorney Greg Lockhart says officials are watching a third person, although they've stopped short of arresting or charging him.  Lockhart says the alleged plot may not have gotten very far along, but authorities don't want to take any chances when public safety is at stake.

Abdi is due in federal court this afternoon for a detention hearing.  If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to up to 80 years in prison and fined one million dollars.
