Butler County Commissioners want Children Services reorganized - Cincinnati News, FOX19-WXIX TV

Butler Co. Commissioners discover problems with county's Children Services

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - The Butler County Commissioners office discovered that many errors were made in a Middletown case where a father and step-mother locked their 12-year old daughter in a basement for nearly a month, tied her up and fed her only cereal.

Commissioners say the abuse should have been detected earlier.

"The specific claims had been made to the children services agency for 17 months, so certainly a lot of things could have been done differently to intervene quickly," said Butler County Commissioner Cindy Carpenter.

Carpenter says the Middletown case isn't the only case that has been overlooked by Children Services.

"There have been many families who have come to the commissioners office and say here are some things that were done wrong," said Carpenter. "There have been case workers report some improvement that could be made."

Now Butler County Commissioners are calling for a complete reorganizing of Children Services.

Carpenter also wants a system that reviews unaccepted cases by a second pair of eyes. Currently a transition team is being organized that will analyze what changes need to be made first.
