Rainier Climbers

Rescuers backing off on search for missing climber

The search for a missing climber on Washington's Mount Rainier has been scaled back, amid diminishing hopes for success. A search and rescue supervisor says he saw climbing gear during yesterday's search, but no sign of the missing climber.

Rescuers believe Anzel Viscaya and his partner Luke Casaday both died in an avalanche on the mountain's Liberty Ridge. Casaday's body has been recovered.

From now on, search efforts will be confined to routine maintenance flights over the mountain until winter. Other climbers will also be asked to be on the look-out.

Viscaya brings to four the number of climbers to die on Liberty Ridge in the past two months.
