EMT charged in deadly ambulance wreck that killed co-worker

MONROE, NC (WBTV) -

An emergency medical technician has been charged after a deadly ambulance wreck on Tuesday that killed his co-worker.

According to Monroe Police, Jonathan Cory Brown, of Cheraw SC, was issued a criminal summons for Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle on Thursday.  The wreck killed his co-worker, 43-year-old Belinda Gale Rivers.

The summons was issued on the same day that Rivers was laid to rest.

Investigators say Rivers was in the passenger seat of a Sandhills Ambulance Service ambulance on Tuesday when  Brown pulled out onto Highway 74 in Monroe.

According to police, witness accounts and evidence show that the ambulance entered the intersection at Venus and Highway 74 during a red light.

The pair was hit by a tractor-trailer.

Rivers was thrown out of the ambulance and pinned underneath, where she died from her injures. No patients were onboard.

Rivers mother talked with WBTV on Wednesday and said her daughter loved her job.

For her mother Linda Owens, the devastating news came by phone.

"It just couldn't be real, I just started screaming and hollering, not my baby, not my baby," said Owens.

She says her daughter enjoyed being an EMT and her patients often requested her by name.

"She had compassion, they would call in to ask for her to come pick them up because they know she was a caring person, she was easy with them," said Owens.

Meg Norton owns Sandhills Ambulance service where Rivers worked and brought in counselors to help her co-workers grieve.

"That's what we're dealing with today, it's like okay this really did happen and she's not coming back to work with us," said Norton.

She says EMT's from other cities have called to offer help. Others posted messages on Facebook or stopped by the office to drop off flowers. Her mother says it's comforting to know her daughter impacted so many.

"I just couldn't believe it was true, but God has a plan, his plan is going to be fulfilled," said Owens.

Rivers was laid to rest Thursday.

Jonathan Brown is expected to have a court date on December 6th in Union County.
