A 32-year-old man is due in court in Olympia, Washington today on charges of intentionally exposing at least 17 women to the AIDS virus. He had been under county health department orders to refrain from unprotected sex and to inform past partners that he's HIV positive. Authorities say he ignored that order along with a later cease-and-desist order from police. Charges against him include assault with sexual motivation. The man's lawyer says his client plans to plead innocent to all charges. He's questioning whether prosecutors can prove intent. Health officials say the man may have known he was infected as early as 1992. Four of the women have tested positive for H-V.
