MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -
An elementary student in Wilson County died from a non-contagious form of bacterial meningitis, according to the Upper Cumberland Health Department.
The 9-year-old student, Sam McLeod, attended West Elementary in Mount Juliet.
Officials said Sam attended school through Wednesday this week but stayed home on Thursday, complaining of a headache and vomiting.
By Thursday night, he was in the intensive care unit at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, where he died around 10 a.m. Friday
School leaders said Friday they had been in contact with the Centers for Disease Control, which said there is no health risk to anyone at the school.
"There is no need for preventative medication to those that have been in contact with the student. Rest assured that all measures have been taken by the school system to maintain safety for all students," said deputy director Mickey Hall in a written statement.
A similar message was relayed to parents of students at the school Friday in a pre-recorded message.
Shane Franklin, a friend of Sam's older brother, told Channel 4 News that Sam had autism. Franklin said Sam would often sit with his mother in the band parents' section during football games and play with her iPad.
