CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The Cincinnati Reds are playing their final regular season game on Wednesday against the Cardinals, but their NLDS opponent is still unknown.

Here are the possible scenarios:

  • If the Reds beat the Cardinals and the Nationals lose, the Reds will have the best record in baseball and will play the winner of the wild card game between St. Louis and Atlanta.
  • If the Nationals win, they will have the best record in baseball and the Reds will play the Giants in the NLDS.
  • If the Reds and Nationals tie for the best record in baseball, the tie goes to the Nationals because they won more regular season matchups between the two teams.

The Reds will have home field advantage in the NLDS. This year, that means that the first two games of the best-of-5 series will be played on the road, while the last three games, if all necessary, will be played at home.

The Nationals play at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday against the Phillies. The Reds play the Cardinals at 8:15.

St. Louis and Atlanta play Friday in the Wild Card game. The NLDS begins Saturday.

If the Reds play the Giants, the schedule will be as follows:

  • Game 1, Saturday, Oct. 6, @San Francisco, Time TBA
  • Game 2, Sunday, Oct. 7, @San Francisco, Time TBA
  • Game 3, Tuesday, Oct. 9 @Cincinnati, Time TBA
  • Game 4, Wednesday, Oct. 10, @Cincinnati, Time TBA, if necessary
  • Game 5, Thursday, Oct. 11, @Cincinnati, Time TBA, if necessary

If the Reds play the wild card winner, the schedule will be as follows:

  • Game 1, Sunday, Oct. 7 @St. Louis or Atlanta, Time TBA
  • Game 2, Monday, Oct. 8 @St. Louis or Atlanta, Time TBA
  • Game 3, Wednesday, Oct. 10 @Cincinnati, Time TBA
  • Game 4, Thursday, Oct. 11 @Cincinnati, Time TBA, if necessary
  • Game 5, Friday, Oct. 12 @Cincinnati, Time TBA, if necessary
