Race to the altar: Couple gets married during Portland Marathon

For two of the runners participating in the Portland Marathon, the race featured a different starting line - the one for their marriage.

Katie Holmes and Eric Johansson reconnected during the race five years ago, when Holmes spotted her old friend near the 20-mile mark.

"Eric was sitting down watching everyone run by," explained Matt Brehm, a friend of the couple. "Katie stopped mid-track; she was running the marathon and said, ‘Eric?'"

The couple began dating, fell in love and had a son. When they decided to get married, the 20-mile point of the Portland Marathon course seemed fitting.

Holmes wore white, with a veil attached to a baseball cap. Johansson donned a Dri-Fit tuxedo shirt.

They ran the first 20 miles of the race together, veering off the course into Columbia Park where family and friends were waiting.

"It's wonderful, the best day," Holmes said. "Very memorable. The most memorable marathon ever, I think."

The couple celebrated for a short time after the ceremony before returning to the course to finish the final 6.2 miles.

"I think it'll be a little easier now," Holmes said. "I've got a little adrenaline going through my body right now."
