LA GRANGE, KY (WAVE) – A dispute over a trailer led to a deadly shooting in La Grange, according to Oldham County Police.

Oldham County Police said the shooting all started as a fight over a trailer, but those who knew the suspected shooter say the shooting had to be an act of self defense. Police were called to Wanaja Farm around noon on Monday.

Police say Richard Hild, 63, showed up to Emmitt Pendleton's house, which sits on the farm's property.

"I've always felt very fortunate to have them up there and this whole thing is really shocking," said Jane Retamoza, Wanaja Farm owner.

Retamoza says the Pendletons aren't associated with the farm, but they have rented the house to them for the last 11 years.

"You couldn't have better renters and just honest to God, good people," said Retamoza.

Police say Hild and Pendleton, 50, were arguing about the ownership of a trailer, when the fight turned physical. Investigators say Pendleton fired one fatal shot that hit Hild in the upper left side of the chest.

"When we went up there and talked to the policeman up there, he really kind of down played it and I didn't really think anything until I heard it on the news to tell you the truth," said Retamoza. "I didn't know anybody had been shot and killed."

At this time, Pendleton is only charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, he has not been charged with anything related to Hild's death. Retamoza believes Pendleton fired the shot out of self defense.

"I can't imagine it being anything but," said Retamoza.

Pendleton's criminal history is from more than two decades ago. In 1982, he was charged with robbery and receiving stolen property. In 1992, he was charged with possession of handgun by a convicted felon, a probation violation, and possession of marijuana. He has had no arrests since then in Kentucky.

The shooting victim's family declined our request for an interview.
