Major advance in DMD announced at Children's Hospital
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Cincinnati Children's Hospital announced a major medical advance on Tuesday.
Doctors discussed the implantation of a ventricular assist device in a Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) patient. The device is a mechanical pump used to support heart function and blood flow in people who have weakened hearts.
DMD is a genetic disorder causing muscles to gradually weaken over time. DMD patients will eventually lose the ability to walk and will have problems with breathing and heart function. The disorder most often affects boys and occurs among all races.
