Ind. fairgrounds arena tours set before renovation

The Indiana State Fairgrounds is offering tours of the arena where the Beatles and Rolling Stones played before it closes for renovations.

The Indiana State Fair Commission will hold a two-hour open house at the 8,200-seat Pepsi Coliseum starting 10 a.m. Saturday. Tours of the building will be offered every 20 minutes.

Officials say the 73-year-old building will be completely refurbished inside while the outside remains essentially the same. The $63 million project will include the construction of an adjoining arena that will allow for simultaneous public events.

State Fairgrounds Executive Director Cindy Hoye says the coliseum is an icon in Indianapolis and the state. It has hosted presidents, musical acts and the Indiana Pacers during their glory days in the ABA.
