Beetle Canopy

Volkswagen canopy over coffeehouse causing stir in Mount Gilead

The owner of a Mount Gilead coffeehouse says she doesn't understand the fuss over her store's canopy. The canopy is the front half of a 1960 Volkswagen beetle.

Taste of Seattle Coffeehouse managers say there's nothing in the village ordinance requiring them to get a permit to hang the car off the building.

Mayor Tom Whiston is threatening to sue the business because they didn't get approval from the Downtown Review Committee. He says it's dangerous.

Owner Susan Spencer says she's confident the canopy is safe since the 410-pound frame was hung with two steel cables anchored in structural steel that will carry up to 12-hundred-80 pounds each.
