Aberdeen crash leaves two officers, one other in hospital


A crash between a pickup truck and an Aberdeen police cruiser leaves two officers and one other in the hospital.

The crash occurred on Route 68 near Gooselick Road in Jefferson Township around 11:30 a.m. Friday. Police say the two officers were headed north bound on Route 68 to Georgetown and the Dodge Dakota was traveling south and turning left onto Day Hill Ripley Road when the vehicles collided. Police say the cruiser hit the pick up on the right side around the right front wheel. The cars then caught on fire.

The officer who was driving the cruiser, Matthew J. Nickolas 34 of Cincinnati, was taken to University Hospital where he is being treated for two broken femur bones, and internal bleeding. He was assisted by a passerby from the patrol car before it caught fire. His official condition is still unclear. The weather prohibited AirCare from transporting the officer.

The other officer, Paul A. Wheeler, age 22 of West Union, and the pick-up driver Donald J. Hauke, 70 of Russellville Ohio, were driven to Brown County Hospital. where they are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
