New London mayor declares state of emergency

NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) -

New London's mayor announced Saturday that he has declared a state of emergency for the city as Hurricane Sandy gets closer to the state.

According to New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio, while Sandy is expected to make landfall around New Jersey, tropical storm and hurricane force winds are expected to reach our state late Sunday night into Monday morning, and could be an issue for 36 hours or more.

Finizio is now urging all city residents to recognize the significance of the alerts that are being issued.

Finizio said the Emergency Operations Center, at the Fire Department Headquarters on Bank Street, has been partially activated as of 1:45 p.m., and full activation will occur Sunday at 6 p.m.

The Water Street parking garage will allow free parking for residents from Sunday to Wednesday, Finizio said and he is urging all city residents to exercise caution during the storm.

Finizio is also asking all residents to avoid any downed power lines and remain off the roads during the storm. If any residents see any hazards please notify the New London Police Department.

Residents of the following streets are urged to consider voluntary evacuation due to anticipated heavy flooding, Finizio said:

Admiral Dr., Chapel Dr., Elliot Ave., Elm St. (Between Lincoln and Garfield), Glenwood Ave. to intersection of Lower Blvd., Guthrie Pl., Hamilton St., Ledyard St., Lincoln Ave., Lower Ocean Ave. (from Jerome to Ocean Beach), Lower Montauk Ave. (from Lower Blvd. to end of Montauk), Lower Blvd., Mott Ave., Mott Ct., Neptune Ave., Neptune Ct., Parkway South, Pequot Ave. (Water side), Quinnepeag Ave., Requinn St., Rocbourne Ln., Rodgers St., Stuart Ave.
