New London mayor wants residents to take evacuations 'seriously'

OLD SAYBROOK, CT (WFSB) -

Only five people used the emergency shelter at Winthrop School in New London Sunday night and at least one city official is upset that residents are not taking the storm threat seriously.

"I just took a drive down through our main flood zones. A lot of people walking the dogs, cars in the driveways, lights on, no windows boarded up," said Mayor Daryl Finizio. "People still haven't taken this seriously."

However, in Old Lyme, residents have started the evacuation process.

"There are people I spoke to yesterday that said they were staying," said Bonnie Reemsynder of Old Lyme. "And I have spoken to them since and found out they are leaving."

Police in Old Saybrook are seeing localized flooding in areas throughout the town Sunday evening.

Mandatory evacuations have been issued for all homes and businesses south of Interstate 95, homes and businesses in other low-lying areas and those homes and businesses near the Connecticut River.

An emergency shelter has been set up at Old Saybrook Senior High School on Boston Post Road. As of 8 p.m., there were 60 people in the shelter.

Kim Johnson of Old Saybrook said she wanted to stay in her home as long as possible, but something changed her mind.

"When it became mandatory, I decided we needed to go for the safety of the children," she said.
