CARROLL COUNTY, KY (FOX19) -
Kentucky State Police have identified two students who were killed in a school bus crash Monday afternoon in Carroll County.
Ryder Deitz and Caroline Tuttle, both 3 years old, died after the bus went off the road, partially overturned on its side and struck a tree.
"I know that the loss is going to be felt for a long, long time," Carroll County Judge/Executive Harold Tomlinson told FOX19. "The loss is significant and nobody can really put into words how those families are feeling right now."
The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. in the 3200 block of Boone Road while taking children home from preschool at the end of the day. Nine children and two adults were on a Head Start bus at the time of the crash.
Deitz and Tuttle were pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner.
Jose Ardon-Landa, Dulce Cruz, Ryleigh Hollingsworth, Brayden Jones and Jordan Raisor, all 3 years old, flown to Kosair after the crash are in stable condition.
The three children that were released from the crash scene to their parents also went to Kosair last night for precautionary measures.
Two of those children were checked out and released, the third was held overnight for observations and is expected to be released today.
Mariah Robles, 4, and Leighann Hendren, 3, were taken to the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital.
The bus assistant, Tina Gividen, 52, is in serious condition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
Authorities say the Head Start bus was equipped with seatbelts and it appears that they were in use by all occupants at the time of the crash.
In a statement, Lisa James, superintendent of the Carroll County School District said: "We are most concerned about the children involved and their families. Counselors and administrators have been present at area hospitals with families of some of the children involved in the accident."
Counselors were also on hand at all schools in the district Tuesday.
While investigators are looking into the cause, they aren't ruling out the make-up of the road.
"It's a small country road and narrow with no lines and no center line and right now we don't know why the bus lost control," said Trooper Brad Arterburn with KSP.
This is not the first time a bus carrying school children has been involved in a fatal crash. On May 16, 1988, the worst school bus crash in U.S. history occurred about two miles from Monday's accident. Larry Mahoney, who was drunk at the time, was driving a Toyota pickup truck when he drove the wrong way on the Interstate and struck the bus head on, killing 27 of the 67 children on board.
Arterburn says while alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the accident, per policy, they are waiting on toxicology reports to come back. He says those reports could take months. In the mean time, Arterburn says investigators are working to reconstruct the accident to learn more about the cause.
Local police also released the 911 call from the driver, Laura Reed, Tuesday. They say the initial call that came from a neighbor will also be released but is being delayed due to technical difficulties.
