Milford opens warming center

MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Hundreds of thousands of people remain in the dark after Hurricane Sandy took out their power earlier in the week. As the weather turns cold, the city of Milford decided to open a 24-hour warming center Friday to allow residents to charge phones and other electronics as well as take a hot shower.

"Last night we stayed here until 11:30 p.m. and got warm and then went home and climbed into bed," said Ginger Burrows of Milford about the warming center.

Food and drinks have been brought to the warming center at Milford Senior Center and many of those items were donated by people such as Pat Taddei of Branford.

"I was not affected but, these are my people here too and I love them so I want to be able to help any way I can," she said.

As of 4:30 p.m., there were nearly 7,000 customers still without power.

"The power is not back on, so they made a decision that we need to keep our people warm," said Lucian Terranova of the American Red Cross.

The warming center was busy Friday afternoon. One Milford man told Eyewitness News that without the center, he would have had to try and find a hotel room and he did not have the money for one.

"I'm here to keep warm, because there's no heat in my house and no hot water," said Josephine Montanaro.

The American Red Cross will remain at the warming center until power is restored. The emergency shelter at Parson's Gymnasium on West River Street will always remain open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Saturday and Nov. 10, there will be a Hurricane Sandy Relief and Recovery Fair with FEMA, with the city's building department and insurance companies all expected to be present. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days at the Parson Gymnasium on West River Street.

City officials and center volunteers are encouraging anyone who can to donate food, water and clothing such as coats, gloves and hats to the center.
