(RNN) - President Barack Obama has won reelection.
Obama overtook the lead in the electoral votes after the Associated Press called the races in California, Washington, Hawaii and New Mexico. When AP projected victory in Ohio, it gave the president 274 electoral votes. It takes 270 to win.
Obama leads in Florida, where 29 more electoral votes are at stake. He leads by about 40,000 votes of nearly 8 million cast, roughly 90 percent of the votes, with mostly Democratic counties in South Florida remaining to be counted.
Republican challenger Mitt Romney dominated the South and Midwest and captured Texas, his biggest electoral prize with 38 votes. He added Missouri and Idaho in the West.
Obama took Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the home state of Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan. Obama also took Minnesota and CNN awarded him California shortly after the polls closed.
He also handily won New Hampshire, a pre-election tossup state with four electoral votes. Romney took North Carolina and has led in Virginia all night, though Obama just closed to within a half a percentage point.
Obama leads in Colorado which is a tossup, and holds a solid lead in New Mexico, where he's expected to win.
