Montessori students collect relief supplies for hurricane victims

Posted: Updated:

The hardships faced by the victims of hurricane Sandy are not lost on the students at a Montessori school in North Avondale.

Students at the New School Montessori have been collecting relief supplies to send to where they are needed most.

New School Principal Eric Dustman says one of the goals of the school is to teach these students to be good members of the community and to think about others in the world around them.

Fifth Grader Ethan Frank says its the least they could do, "I was thinking that there's a lot of people in need and that we need to step up and help."

Frank and his classmates all started collecting supplies last week to send to the victims of hurricane Sandy.  They came up with the idea after they heard that Tracy Hatfield, a friend of one of the parents, was planning a trip to New York to be a storm relief volunteer.

Hatfield says the idea came naturally, "The people at the school heard what I was doing and they thought 'well if you're headed that way anyway we want to give donations. It'll be great for the kids to really be able to help somebody else.'"

The kids are stuffing Tracy's trailer with everything they've collected,

They get a sense of doing something good. Ten-year-old David Taffe says he likes being able to help, "Everybody needs to help and I think that the chance that we're having to help is a great thing that we can do."

Liam Crawford is a forth grader who also likes being able to help, "I think its really good for people because they are in need of it and they don't have very many things after the flood."

Marley Sullivan says she can empathize with the storm victims' suffering,"I just can't imagine how hard it would be to be in that kind of storm and be stuck and no electricity."

In addition to clothing, food and blankets, the kids have collected some of their favorite things likes toys and candy to share with others.

Hatfield plans to hit the road Sunday with her fully loaded trailer. Until then, the children will continue to collect relief supplies.
