WWII veteran has donation jar stolen outside busy store

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A World War II veteran was the target of FOX 12's Most Wanted outside a busy grocery store.

The 91-year-old veteran was collecting donations outside the Safeway store at Southeast 122 and Powell when thieves struck.

That veteran says it happened so fast, but he says he did notice the thieves because they were acting suspicious around the store.

Marion "Elle" Ellsworth was collecting donations for his VFW Post on Veterans Day.

He said he was set up outside the front door of the store and noticed a couple of teens who were acting suspicious.

A few minutes later, Ellsworth said, the teens went by and one of them grabbed his can of money and took off running.

"I'm from the greatest generation and we weren't taught that way. It just blows my mind and I can't understand taking somebody else's stuff to begin with, especially for a charity like this," said Ellsworth.

Despite being robbed, Ellsworth said he feels sorry for the kids because they're headed in the wrong direction in life.

He said he's been doing this for 15 years and has never had any problems.

Even though he was targeted this time, Ellsworth said this won't keep him from collecting donations in the future.

He believes the teens got away with about $50 to $100.

Portland police are reviewing surveillance video from the store to see if they can try and identify the teens.

Ellsworth's post is hosting a turkey dinner this Sunday in hopes of replacing some of the stolen money. It runs from noon to 5 p.m. at 3405 SE 87th Avenue, Portland.
