Cleveland Clinic nurse charged in murder-for-hire plot

Andrew Martin Andrew Martin

A Cleveland Clinic emergency room nurse has been charged for trying to hire a patient to kill a woman in a dispute over a home.

Prosecutors say Andrew Martin offered one of his patients $10,000 to kill Joy Comey of Lakewood last month. According to an affidavit released Friday, Martin approached the patient because he "looked like a big guy." Martin reportedly asked the man if he'd ever "hurt anyone." The man replied, "yes, no, maybe."

Documents show Martin went on to tell the patient that he wanted him to kill Comey because she was "trying to mess up (his) life." Martin said he wanted the patient to "put four in her head and make it look like a robbery."

The man agreed to the do the job, but called police to tip them off to the plot.

Court documents reveal Martin and Comey have been in a dispute over the Lakewood home for months. Comey inherited the Clifton Blvd. house after her brother died. However, Martin claims the house was transferred to him before he died. The affidavit claims Martin approached a contractor to find a notary who would be willing to back date a deed to the home.

Comey had filed a lawsuit over legal ownership of the home.

An arson investigation is underway for a fire at the home on May 25. There's been no arrests for that fire.

The Cleveland Clinic released the following statement on Martin: "Mr. Martin has been suspended without pay pending further investigation and the completion of the judicial process. He has only been employed one year with us and there have been no prior instances of misconduct in the workplace. We are taking this very seriously and are working with the authorities on their investigation."
