Commissioners hold off on budget vote

Hamilton County commissioners will spend a few more days working on the 2013 budget before putting it to a final vote.

At least 150 Hamilton County employees will most likely lose their jobs next year after the budget is approved.

The budget, proposed by Republican President Greg Hartmann, will fill a $14.1 million deficit, but that means that county departments across the board would need to make cuts.

While Hartmann and fellow Republican Chris Monzel believe this is the way to go, Democratic commissioner Todd Portune disagrees.

"It's a bad budget because of the impact on county and county operations," said Portune.

"It also does all this without increasing sales or other taxes within commissioners control to balance the general fund," said Hartmann.

In the last five years, commissioners have slashed $65 million from the general fund.
