JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) – A Jeffersonville High School assistant principal accused of shoplifting an iPad from a Walmart where he worked a second job submitted his resignation on Monday and opted for early retirement.
The Jeffersonville Police Department also revealed that David Milburn allegedly sold the stolen iPad to a student at the school for $400. Detectives said the transaction took place in the school's parking lot on September 7.
Jeffersonville High School students are still in shock their assistant principal is accused of shoplifting. They had only good things to say about Milburn.
"He was a soccer referee, and I played soccer, so we kind of have a closer connection," said JHS senior Skyler Davis. "He always would stop me in the hallway and ask me how my day was going. He was a great guy."
According to a Louisville Metro Police Department arrest report, Milburn took a Samsung Galaxy tablet and an iPad in August from the Middletown Walmart where he worked.
"We had never had any idea that he had another job," said JHS senior Ally Whitlow.
According to the arrest report, Milburn admitted stealing the iPad but said he sold it on Craigslist.
"I don't understand why he would do it," said JHS senior Eryn Rutledge. "He is an assistant principal. He should be getting good money and stuff like that. He should be well taken care of."
In October, students at JHS had three different principals in just one week. Milburn was appointed to take charge after Jim Sexton was forced to move schools for unknown reasons. Milburn didn't hold his interim position for long once Superintendent Dr. Andrew Melin learned Milburn was charged with shoplifting.
The criminal investigation could mean the end of Milburn's career in education.
"He's human just like us. People make mistakes, but that's a huge mistake on his part," said Rutledge.
Milburn served as interim principal at Jeffersonville High for about a week before he was charged with shoplifting. He has been with Greater Clark County Schools for 22 years.
The school board will vote Tuesday night on whether to accept Milburn's resignation
