AVONDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
People describe Donella Clauschee as a very private person.
But as private as she was, it was no secret that things between her and Michael Hall, her boyfriend of seven years and the father of her 4-year-old daughter, had gotten to a very ugly place.
Clauschee, 28, was discovered shot to death dead on the floor of her Avondale garage Monday morning. Her 4-year-old daughter was found strapped in her car seat nearby. Hall was arrested in Las Vegas Tuesday morning in connection with the slaying.
Clauschee's former supervisor at a Valley mental health organization, who only gave us her first name Sheryl, said she knew Clauschee was concerned about being hurt by Hall.
"From what Donella had told me, she had filed a restraining order," Sheryl said. "She told me he would continue to harass her. She had to change her phone number. She had to change the locks on the house, reset the security system. He just wouldn't leave her alone when she had asked him to leave for threatening her."
CBS 5 News went to Avondale Municipal Court to get a copy of the restraining order Clauschee filed in on Aug. 2, 2010. On the paperwork she wrote that she and Hall had been together for seven years and had a daughter together. She wrote that over the past year arguments have been increasing. She went on to write that "in the past six months, verbal threats to harm me physically are now on a daily basis."
"Michael contested it and the judge threw it out," said Sheryl, relating what her friend had told her. "They were asked to do some mediation counseling and therapy because of her daughter. But Donella had been in contact with me and told me that wasn't working, primarily because Michael never showed."
CBS 5 asked to speak to the municipal judge who handled the case. He declined. A clerk at the court said records show that on Hall did fight the order of protection and a hearing was set for Aug. 20. But when that day came, the court had notes that Clauschee asked before the hearing started that the order be quashed.
When Sheryl first heard about the murder she said she knew in her gut, that Hall was the only possible suspect.
"It shocked me," Sheryl said. "It was surreal. I felt sick to my stomach."
Since the shooting death family and friends of the victim have described Clauschee as a happy, upbeat person who was committed to her family and work.
"I guess the one message I want to get across is I would like Donella to be remembered for the person she was and the commitment to her family her friends and her joy for life rather than the way her life was ended," Sheryl said.
