Fire Marshal urging families to decorate with caution for the holidays

(FOX19) -

The Ohio Fire Marshal is asking families to use caution when decorating for the holidays.

State Fire Marshal, Larry Flowers, says three factors can become an increased fire threat this season, including decorative lighting, live Christmas trees and unattended candles.

Experts say to never plug lights in with damaged sockets or wires, which could cause an electrical failure. If there is damage to light strands, throw them out and replace with the correct indicated wattage.

More lighting safety tips:

  • Outdoor lights are specifically for outside and should be fastened securely.
  • Don't connect too many light sets together, and don't run them under rugs.
  • Turn off the lights when you go to bed or leave the house.

Christmas tree safety tips:

  • Purchase Christmas trees as fresh as possible. Cut at the base of trunk, water daily and get rid of the tree once it becomes dry.
  • Put the tree as far from heat sources as possible, avoiding lit candles. 1/5 of holiday fires occur because of this reason.
  • Be sure to not block any main exits to your house with the tree or presents.
