COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

A driver who caused a crash that killed two people and a dog in Covington was sentenced on Monday.

Richard Michael Beers was sentenced to eight and a half months in jail for two counts of reckless homicide.

Investigators say Beers ran a red light and caused a crash that killed Brian Hehman and his wife, Melissa, on Aug. 5, 2011 near the intersection of KY 17 (Madison Pike) and Ky. 3035.

Beers will be released from jail on the anniversary of the crash. The judge said he made the sentence like that on purpose so Beers will remember what he did.

Beers was also sentenced to a diversion program for five years.
