Change in military status for Hassoun
The Pentagon is announcing a formal status change for US Marine Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun. Hassoun had previously been listed as "captured." That has now changed to "returned to military control."
This is primarily a technical matter. The military is investigating him in connection with the circumstances of his disappearance in Iraq.
Hassoun is now en route to a US military hospital in Germany, where he'll undergo further evaluation.
Hassoun turned up in his native Lebanon more than two weeks after going missing in Iraq. There was speculation he might have deserted, and was heading to Lebanon when he was purportedly captured by insurgents.
Military officials are now investigating if the entire kidnapping might have been part of a hoax.
All agreed that any criminal prosecutions will hinge on whether the nursing home staff made honest mistakes or were "culpably negligent."Full Story >
