Oprah Winfrey gives $1M to Underground Railroad museum
Television personality Oprah Winfrey has given one million dollars to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Officials of the Cincinnati museum say Winfrey is also serving as narrator on an educational film for the museum, called "Brothers of the Borderland."
The museum is to commemorate the secret "Underground Railroad" network that helped slaves escape from the South to the free North during the 1800s. Opening ceremonies are scheduled August 23rd for the museum, located along Cincinnati's Ohio River shore.
Museum officials have solicited other large donations from celebrities and business executives toward the Freedom Center's anticipated cost of 110 million dollars.
