Highlands Bluebirds win sixth straight state championship

Donovan McCoy passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more as Fort Thomas Highlands defeated Collins 47-0 Friday night in the KHSAA Class 4A state championship game.

The Bluebirds (14-1), who set state records by clinching their sixth straight championship and 22nd overall title, out gained Collins 476 total yards at Houchens-Smith Stadium.

Highlands got the win despite the absence of longtime coach Dale Mueller, who was in New York because of a family death. Defensive coordinator Brian Weinrich filled in for Mueller.

"What happened tonight is because of him.  He built the program and the foundation is so solid.  We just had to make sure we didn't screw it up tonight.  They were definitely thinking about him", said Weinrich.

Defensive end Seth Hope led the Bluebirds with nine tackles, including five sacks.

McCoy was named game MVP with two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs.

"This means the world to us.  Every year this is the expectation and it's not to get to state, it's to win state.  That's a lot of pressure in a community that expects that, but every year we seem to exceed expectations.  I couldn't think of a better way to end it", said McCoy.
